April Is National Car Care Month: Your Complete Oklahoma Checklist

April is officially National Car Care Month, and the timing couldn't be better for Oklahoma drivers. We just survived another unpredictable spring — freezing mornings, 75-degree afternoons, hail, wind, and more potholes than anyone can count. Now summer is right around the corner, and Oklahoma summer doesn't play nice with neglected cars.

The smart move? Handle everything now while the weather is still comfortable, before 100-degree days make standing in a parking lot miserable.

Your Complete April Checklist

  • AC system: Test it now, not in June when it's 105 and you're sitting in traffic on I-35. If it's blowing warm or has a weird smell, the refrigerant may be low, the compressor may be failing, or the cabin filter could be moldy from winter moisture.
  • Coolant level and condition: Your engine's cooling system is about to work overtime for the next five months. Check the coolant level and look at the color — if it's rusty, dark, or has debris floating in it, a coolant flush is overdue.
  • Battery test: Here's something most people don't know — summer heat actually kills car batteries faster than winter cold. High temperatures accelerate the chemical reaction inside the battery, causing it to degrade. If your battery is more than three years old, get it tested.
  • Tire inspection: After pothole season, your tires have taken a beating. Look for bulges on the sidewalls (a sign of internal damage), uneven wear patterns (alignment issue), and check tread depth. Also check your tire pressure — it fluctuates with temperature swings.
  • Wiper blades: Oklahoma storm season is here. Severe thunderstorms, hail, and heavy downpours are a regular occurrence from April through June. Your wipers need to work perfectly, not streak and skip across the windshield.
  • All lights: Headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and fog lights if you have them. Spring storms mean reduced visibility, and a burned-out brake light is both dangerous and a ticket waiting to happen.
  • Brake inspection: How do your brakes feel? Any squealing, grinding, pulsating, or a soft pedal? Get them inspected before summer road trip season hits.
  • Belts and hoses: Heat accelerates rubber deterioration. A cracked serpentine belt or a soft radiator hose will leave you stranded in the worst possible conditions — a 100-degree day.
