Pre-Road Trip Inspection: Don't Hit I-35 Without Checking These First
The stretch of I-35 between Oklahoma City and Dallas is 200 miles of open highway with long gaps between services. Break down south of Ardmore on a July afternoon, and you're looking at a three-hour wait for a tow truck in triple-digit heat. That's not a hypothetical — it happens every holiday weekend. A 30-minute pre-trip inspection prevents the kind of roadside disaster that ruins a vacation before it starts.
The Pre-Trip Checklist
Here's what we check before you load the cooler and hit the turnpike:
- Tires: Tread depth, sidewall condition, and inflation pressure including the spare. Underinflated tires on hot Oklahoma asphalt blow out fast. We check all five tires.
- Brakes: Pad thickness, rotor condition, and brake fluid level. Hauling a family and luggage adds hundreds of pounds that your brakes have to handle through the Arbuckle Mountains.
- Fluids: Engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Low coolant on a summer I-35 run is a ticking time bomb.
- Belts and hoses: Serpentine belt cracks, coolant hose soft spots, and clamp tightness. A broken belt shuts down your water pump, alternator, and AC all at once.
- Battery: Load test and terminal inspection. Nothing kills a road trip like a dead battery at a Buc-ee's parking lot.
- Lights: Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazards. Oklahoma Highway Patrol actively tickets burned-out lights on the turnpike.
- Wipers: Oklahoma spring storms blow in fast on I-35. Streaky wipers at 75 mph in a downpour are genuinely dangerous.
Where Breakdowns Happen
The most common breakdown spots on I-35 south are between Pauls Valley and Ardmore — a rural stretch where cell service can be spotty and tow trucks are scarce. Going north, the Wichita corridor through Perry and Ponca City has the same problem. Either direction, you don't want to be the car on the shoulder with the hood up.
