Spark Plug Replacement: The Tune-Up Your Car Is Begging For
Your engine has been trying to tell you something. That stumble when you pull away from a red light on Reno Avenue. The rough idle sitting in the Chick-fil-A drive-through. The extra second of cranking on cold January mornings. These are textbook signs of worn spark plugs, and ignoring them costs you money at the pump every single day.
How Do You Know Your Plugs Are Shot?
Spark plugs fire thousands of times per minute to ignite the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. When the electrode wears down or carbon deposits build up, the spark weakens. You'll notice:
- Engine misfires — that jerky, uneven feeling under acceleration
- Rough or shaky idle at stoplights
- Decreased fuel economy — sometimes 10-15% worse than normal
- Hard starts, especially in cold weather
- Sluggish acceleration merging onto I-35 or I-44
How Long Do Spark Plugs Last?
It depends on the type. Standard copper plugs last about 20,000-30,000 miles. They're cheap but wear fast. Platinum plugs push that to 60,000 miles with a harder electrode that resists erosion. Iridium plugs are the top tier — lasting 80,000 to 100,000 miles with the finest electrode tip for the strongest spark. Most vehicles built after 2010 came with iridium from the factory.
If you're driving 15,000 miles a year around the OKC metro, even iridium plugs need replacing every five to six years. Plenty of drivers forget until the check engine light forces the issue.
What Does Replacement Involve?
On most four-cylinder engines, we can swap all four plugs in about 30-45 minutes right in your driveway or parking lot. Six-cylinder and V8 engines take a bit longer, especially on trucks where some plugs hide under intake manifolds or coil packs. We pull each plug, inspect it for signs of deeper engine issues (oil fouling, coolant contamination, abnormal wear), gap the new plugs to factory spec, and torque them properly. Overtightening spark plugs strips aluminum cylinder heads — a repair that costs thousands.
We also inspect your ignition coils while we're in there. A weak coil paired with a fresh plug still produces a weak spark. If a coil is cracked or corroded, we'll let you know before buttoning everything back up.
