Oklahoma Winter Battery Care: Don't Get Caught in the Cold
Oklahoma winters are unpredictable. One day it's 60°F, the next it's an ice storm with single-digit wind chills. Your car battery takes the hardest hit during these cold snaps, and a battery that was barely holding on in October will be dead by January.
Why Cold Weather Kills Batteries
At 32°F, a car battery loses about 35% of its cranking power. At 0°F, it loses up to 60%. Meanwhile, your engine requires more power to start in cold weather because the oil is thicker. It's a double whammy.
Winter Battery Tips
- Get tested before winter — A simple voltage and load test tells you if your battery will survive. We offer free battery testing with any service.
- Check your connections — Corrosion on battery terminals increases resistance and reduces power. Clean terminals make a big difference.
- Limit short trips — Short drives don't give your alternator enough time to fully recharge the battery. If you mainly do short trips, consider a trickle charger.
- Park in a garage — Even an unheated garage is 10-20 degrees warmer than outside. That margin can be the difference between starting and not.
- Replace if it's old — Batteries over 3 years old are at higher risk. In Oklahoma's climate (extreme heat AND cold), 3-4 years is typical lifespan.
