Winter Car Care in Oklahoma: Don't Let January Catch You Off Guard
Oklahoma doesn't get Minnesota winters, but what we do get can be worse in some ways. One day it's 60 degrees, the next morning there's a sheet of ice on every road in the metro. That kind of rapid swing is brutal on vehicles — and on unprepared drivers. Here's how to make sure your car handles whatever January has coming.
Battery: The Number One Winter Failure
Cold mornings kill weak batteries. If your battery is more than three years old, get it tested before the next cold snap rolls through. A battery that barely starts your car at 40 degrees won't do anything at 15 degrees. We test and replace batteries on-site — you don't even have to leave your driveway.
Tires: Your Only Contact with Icy Roads
Check your tire tread depth. Stick a quarter in the groove — if you can see the top of Washington's head, your tread is getting low. On icy bridges along I-35, I-44, and the Kilpatrick Turnpike, tread depth is the difference between stopping and sliding. Also confirm your tires are properly inflated. Cold air drops tire pressure roughly 1 PSI for every 10-degree temperature drop.
Coolant and Antifreeze
Your coolant mixture should be about 50/50 antifreeze and water for Oklahoma winters. This protects your engine down to about -34 degrees Fahrenheit. If your coolant hasn't been flushed in two years, now is the time. Old coolant loses its freeze protection and its ability to prevent corrosion.
Wipers and Washer Fluid
Oklahoma ice storms coat windshields in a way that's almost impossible to see through. Replace worn wiper blades now — not when you're squinting through streaks on the Broadway Extension at 7 AM. Fill your washer fluid reservoir with a winter-rated formula that won't freeze in the lines.
Build a Winter Emergency Kit
Keep these in your trunk from now through March:
- A warm blanket
- Flashlight with fresh batteries
- Jumper cables or a portable jump starter
- Phone charger (battery pack)
- Small bag of cat litter or sand for traction
- Ice scraper and small shovel
Oklahoma-Specific Hazards to Remember
Bridges freeze before roads — every overpass on I-35 from Edmond to Norman is a potential ice patch. Lake Hefner's wind chill makes the northwest side of OKC significantly colder than other areas. Black ice forms on shaded stretches of road, especially early morning on residential streets.
